What is the Möbius Project?
The Möbius Project is a major Maplesoft initiative to support teaching and learning. It makes it easy to create rich, interactive mathematical applications, share them with everyone, and grade them to assess understanding.

The Möbius Project brings together many Maplesoft technologies to support every step of the experience.

  • Maple is used as the authoring environment for the applications
  • Users can interact with the applications using a web browser. MapleNet provides the mathematical power behind The Möbius Project web site to perform the computations.
  • Users can also run the applications directly on their own computer by using Maple or the free Maple Player.
  • These applications are also gradeable by Maple T.A., giving instructors a whole new way to measure and deepen students’ understanding.

Why call it “The Möbius Project”?
For many aspiring mathematicians, the Möbius strip provides their first real glimpse into just how strange and wonderful the world of mathematics can be. We want this project to embody the same sense of fun, excitement, and discovery.

Plus, it sounds cool.

What is a Möbius App?
A Möbius App, sometimes called a Math App, is any interactive Maple document that is shared through The Möbius Project. Any Maple document that uses interactive elements such as sliders and buttons can be shared through The Möbius Project.

Is the Möbius Project a separate product that needs to be purchased?
Many aspects of The Möbius Project can be used by anyone, with no purchase necessary. Möbius Apps can be used by anyone with a web browser. They can also be used by downloading and installing the free Maple Player.

To create a Möbius App, you need Maple.

To grade a Möbius App, you need Maple T.A.

How do I create a Möbius App?
Use Maple to create a Möbius App. You can create interactive applications in Maple using the Exploration Assistant or by including interactive embedded components, such as sliders, buttons, and math entry boxes, in your document.

How do I share a Möbius App?
After you have created your App in Maple, you can share it with the entire Maple community simply by posting it to the Möbius group in the MapleCloud. Once the app has been approved by the moderator, the App will appear on the Möbius Project website. It will also be accessible from inside Maple and the MaplePlayer from the standard MapleCloud palette.

You can also share your App with private groups, including your own personal group for testing purposes.

How do I grade a Möbius App?
Möbius Apps are gradeable by Maple T.A. You can embed a Möbius App into a Maple T.A. assignment question, where it can be used as a specialized calculator for working out steps of the solution or visualizing the problem, or the Möbius App itself can be the question. To answer the question, students interact with the App directly inside Maple T.A.

Maple T.A. will automatically grade the Möbius App by looking at what the student did with it, such as examining the location of sliders and the contents of math entry boxes. Like other Maple T.A. questions, if there is more than one correct answer, Maple T.A. will analyze the response mathematically to assign an appropriate grade.

For an App to be graded, you must provide Maple T.A. with a Maple procedure that it can run to properly evaluate the student’s response. This procedure can be embedded in the Möbius App document or specified inside Maple T.A.

The ability to grade Möbius Apps is included in Maple T.A. 9.5 as a technology preview. To learn about special services and support to assist instructors in creating, testing, and deploying gradeable Möbius Apps, contact Maplesoft.

What kind of Möbius Apps can I create?
Whatever you want! Any interactive Maple applications that provide a simple point-and-click interface is suitable, from solving an integral or visualizing a function to computing the dissolved oxygen content in a river or calculating the necessary thickness of foil for a solar panel. You can create interactive math apps to solve problems, visualize solutions, explore concepts, and assess understanding.
