Exporting Protection Relay Settings to SEL Configuration Tools Using Maple Flow

This demo from the MAPLE FLOW—Powered By Maple series shows how power utilities with relay settings calculations can use Maple Flow to export the values to the AcSELerator QuickSet configuration tool from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) when managing programmable protection relay devices.

Power system protection engineers widely use Maple Flow to calculate the necessary sensitivity parameters for their programmable protection relay devices for overcurrent, phase, and ground distance protection. This example shows the export of the sequence impedance parameters from Maple Flow into AcSELerator QuickSet, consistent with protection device updates in a power system or transmission line. This can be developed into a smooth, controlled process for updating asset settings with built-in traceability, saving engineering time and reducing the risk of errors from manually copying data between tools.

The data export feature in Maple Flow gives engineers:

  • Efficient integration between AcSELerator QuickSet and Maple Flow for managing relay calculations.
  • Use of unique variable names and date-stamped folders ensures accurate referencing across platforms.
  • Specialized export/import commands to apply configuration updates and track changes in accordance with compliance needs.
  • A fast, consistent process that can be scaled to program SEL protection relay assets across distribution or transmission systems.
